So I had some time to do some After Effects render tests... I did a test comp of a 20 second shot that is like an average shot in terms of how much processing needs to be done too it... It has Frischlust lenscare "depth of field" applied to two layers... as I've found depth maps which have a really out of focus element overlapping a sharp in focus element don't look correct so you have to render the foreground separately and apply blur to them both.... let me mention again that Philipp from Frischluft is awesome ^ ^ The shot also had one iteration of RevisionFX motion blur applied.... Now here's some cheats... I like AE's "Add grain" effect BUT ITS TOO SLOW! So what I did was render out my own stock film grain ^ ^ By rendering AE's add grain effect tweaked to my liking applied to a black solid... its rendered to a png sequence so then all I do is bring that in to my comps and apply it over my comps using the Add transfer mode and it looks great and takes no time at all to render... you can buy 2k real film grain stock for like thousands of dollars too 0_o but my cheapo one looks fine....
So I had this 20 second comp...1920x802 Exr sequence.... working in 32bit float... and it took 30 minutes to render... So by rough calculations the whole film would take about 200 hours to render in After Effects which isn't too bad...
Now after I posted my last After Effects CS4 is SLOW rant the After Effects product manager posted this on his blog AFTER EFFECTS CS5 IS FASTER ^ ^ So now that I see that it wont take TOO LONG in CS4.... If I manage to buy two 4gb sticks of ram for my i7 box for a total of 12gb which will cost about $350 it should get even faster granted I'm able to upgrade to CS5 as well... So I'm not going to worry about it anymore....
NOW also I'm glad I only use two After Effects plugins because since CS5 is 64bit you'll have to get new versions of your plugins to run on it... I used to use a ton in the past BUT now since I'm like a C4d ninja I do all my fancy shet in 3d... so in comp I'm really just adding finishing touches rather than having to do major work.... Since I work in linear in C4d now with THE BEST MONEY I EVER SPENT FOR A PLUGIN TEH AWESOME DEGAMMA.... I try and usually ALWAYS succeed at nailing the lighting in C4d now... actually yeh I won't render a shot unless the lighting is right on... I'll do some minor levels tweaks in AE but no "relighting" for sure...
I did some other disk space calculations as well and I'll need to get four more 2tb hard drives before the film is finished...
Tomorrow I finish re-boarding this months work and recording the temp voices to sync too then its back to animation!

your ability to consume TB's baffels me
ReplyDeletewell played m dot well played
Well that's awesome that your AE slowness won't be as much of an issue anymore :)
ReplyDeleteSo what exactly does degamma do?
