So the new Blender project film thing is out...
From the end credits looks like about 100 people were involved... and apparently it took them about a year of production... seems they had some funding as well...
So this must be like the best a small group of artists can do today right? This must be the "high water" mark for a team of amateur artists numbering 20-100 strong eh?
I mean what could ONE person do compared to the work of 100!?! One person spending a year of production to do a two hour film instead of 15 minutes... I MEAN HONESTLY AN INDIVIDUAL HAS THEY LIMITS!!!
SORRY thats just me being a jerk ^ ^ but hey I can't be a bully cause its like whole teams of people vs. lil ol me ^ ^ POOOOR little ol MEEEE! haha
SideNOTE about character: I believe for a film to live on.... its the strong UNIQUE memorable characters that live on long after a film is over not the easily understood "story" If a film doesn't have such characters the memory of the film fades... Cool settings and situations are fun and all but if you dont have that CHARACTER then its all just an exercise in production in my eyes... So when most cg animatorY people are putting time and energy into "story" they should REALLY be putting it into CHARACTER... you can have the most amazing story EVER but if yer character is a walking cliche void of individuality the film is going to be BORING... AND TATTOO's and PIERCINGS dont make people "unique" SORRY! COUGH... yeh it seems when it comes to cg stuff people believe by making characters look unique that they somehow ARE unique... and THAT AINT THE CASE...its whats inside that character and SCREAMS to ooze out they every pore against they will which gives them character... BUT I believe before you can CREATE interesting characters yourself you must first BECOME AN INTERESTING character yourself in real life.. so live REAL LIFE and learn from it... MINE YOUR EXPERIENCES for they drama and for the hints of character here and there and then over time you'll be able to forge one for yourself....until then they are just soulless polygonal golems with big puppy dog eyes staring blankly at the camera... I mean its YER CHOICE do you want to make entertainment to accompany popcorn eating OR do you want to connect with people's Souls?

JESUS CHRIST! Don't mean to be a troll, but this story is RETARDED. Are we supposed to believe that she traveled the whole world to find a dragon that she barely met (because the animation didn't develop a connection between the characters, a real bond). And the dragon was taken by one of its kind... ZOMG!. And the freakin' cave fell apart after she killed the dragon... why? Why the special blade from the random dude in the middle of the snow, that was hanging around right next to the old generic wise guy... WHY?
ReplyDeleteThe only good thing about this short is that it was done using Open Source software. But once again these excellent tools are used to make 'pretty' renders and tell weak (lame) stories.
On one hand, it's nice to see that blender has some room to stretch in...on the other hand..for 100 ppl, is that all they can do? 15 minutes?
ReplyDeleteSure it looks as good as the rest..but it LOOKS like the REST!
If this was a one guy effort, I might be a little more impressed...but for over 50+...people project...clap clap you are a pro at blender! Woo! Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going back to learning to make better stuff then this ^ ^
Seriously (and you of all people probably know this), You can still learn something out of a bad movie...Find what you DON'T like and it will teach you what to avoid!
I MEAN a team has limits too ^ ^
ReplyDeleteit needs to live together er something or to go to one school ^ ^
after Kenshiro gets a hug Im sure in a word

TAO comes when your whole world where you live collapsed

but not only waves we have
so if we can work as with one consciousness as aliens
as when we laugh
so Reyori will become a little alienate

An interesting story just keeps me watching to see how it ends
and i don't really ever remember it again
Hi. As one of those "about 100 people", I can tell you that counting up the number of people involved doesn't give an accurate picture of the work done.
ReplyDeleteIn an unusual step, the project crowdsourced a number of prop models and background animations in two weekend sprints. Like the majority of the people listed, I contributed on one of these weekends -- in my case, building a set of hanging decorations. The only compensation for these contributions was credit in the film.
Additionally, the developers in the credits are listed because they were working on the new version Blender, not because they were working on film scenes. Most films do not include the names of the people making the software packages they use; otherwise a film like "We Are The Strange" would have listed the hundreds of people who worked on AfterEffects and Cinema4D.
I believe the core visuals of the movie were made by a small team of about seven people working full-time for about nine months. I think, given the quality of the work, this is fairly impressive.
I also think that if one wanted to set up a small studio (like you mentioned the French students doing a couple blog posts back), the Sintel project would be a good blueprint... a small dedicated core team, funded by fans of previous work through DVD preorders, using volunteer crowdsourcing for low-priority work.
(BTW: the release is great for the indie creator. Everything in the movie is free for reuse by anyone: models, rigs, animations, textures, sound, final footage -- and of course Blender itself.)
2010 0_0? graphics of like 2008
ReplyDeleteumm...in such situation it's the exit of the place to make it unreal or the new vision in 3D
XToon shaders + Xray blend lol
Oh, fTR3 ! Oh wow lol
I don't know why all try to be the best at vRay
3D rendered brains
The thing is not in Render the thing in new vision
and maybe I can't do better but they can't that too lol
Sonic the Hedgehog is c00l
2D Sonic will beat 100 VRay guys

I thought the story really sucked. Come on, she doesn't accept that the dragon's mother came back to get the baby dragon, so she sets out to get it back, and is even willing to kill the mother to get her pet back. Sintel comes across as schizophrenic, delusional, and selfish. The Blender people are loving it. Must be the emotional attachment to the software.
ReplyDeleteThere are tons of people saying "great storytelling" all over the web for this thing. Do people even know what story-telling is anymore!?
ReplyDelete@Grant From what I've seen people will say any "story" that they are able to comprehend is a "great story"...so if they can understand it then it's "good" if they can't understand it it has "no story" or is "bad'
ReplyDeleteIt's also possible that the people who don't like Sintel comprehend it better than those who do.
ReplyDeletei know ya got a newer post up already but i was following the development of this project pretty closely
ReplyDeleteand i gotta say i was dissapointed in the film over all, sure it's a good or an ok story but i really felt like it could have been told in their original plan of 6 to 8 minutes for what it was and on top of that i personally only have an interest in either great film or films so shitty its laughable and sintel managed to be mediocre.
i'll happy for all the technogeek improvements it'll bring blender(my 3d app of choice) and i can appreciate the crowdsourcing that was involved on this film.
but the story felt much more bland than what i was anticipating. i hope they get some better writers for their next open project
i did like the end of it however when she sees her reflection in the blood
Ok, I went easy on 'Sintel' on my own blog, but I'll let 'er rip here... Firstly, it's cool they were able to use blender for this, and that tool is being continually improved and developed so that there's a freeware solution for the indie animator. Maybe someday someone will make an actual good film with blender. Technically, the animation quality coming out of the blender projects has been getting better. But they're also following Pixar and Dreamworks down the garden path, as if they have something to prove to animators who use "real software"
ReplyDeleteI wonder how much Sintel suffered from 'filmmaking by committee'? Given the number of people who worked on this for the year, even just considering the core staff of animators, modellers, and artists... This film should be a lot longer. I made 'Tales from the Afternow' in 121 days and it's 10 minutes long... Archon took me 3 years but I did it the half arsed backwards way of filmmaking...
Mdot is right, it comes down to story and character, if you don't have this basis for your project then all you are doing is making a demo reel. The story in Sintel is flimsy at best, smeared together from various fantasy sources and strewn haphazardly over the screen. I called the ending halfway through as I was watching her 'trek' through the wilderness, luckily they didn't use the old cliche "it was all a dream" ending.
Animation is the only cinematic medium where you can do anything you want, there's no limitations aside from your own skill and imagination. Everyone has the ability to create their own original idea and bring it to life on the screen. If yo want to do it live action, you need more money and friends to act on camera, animation frees you from having to be sociable and wealthy.
All creativity builds upon the past and derives it's inspiration from previous works. The 'industry' calls this piracy and does everything to try and squash this (and by looking at films such as Sintel, produced entirely outside of the big studio money system, their strategy is working...) (ab)Normal creative people call this 'inspiration', the only thing which differentiates inspiration from plagairism is the number of sources you rip off.. ;)
That all said, it's important for you to create an original mythology in which to base your story, to create original characters to populate that world, and create the story; the conflict and adversity which will drive the characters and hold the interest of the audience. This may seem like a daunting task, but then again so does making an entire feature film, if you think about it in terms of one huge monolithic project. But if you think about it as a hundred small projects that you bite into ravenously until your creative hunger is satiated (it never is >:) then you can realize your own creative vision.
The 'hanging decorations' that JCL posted here as their contribution to the project are a good example of this: Nice decorations, btw, I'm not trying to dis your modeling here by any stretch, I'm just curious as to how long that took you to make. When I do my productions, something like that decoration is an element I wouldn't want to spend more than 15 minutes making. There's a lot that has to be created from scratch when building sets and environments... there's a whole film that has to get done.

ReplyDeleteWell played sir those are great words ^^
I watched 'sintel' the first time and thought it was 'alright', then the second time I got bored halfway through , and went back to editing sound files for my next film....
ReplyDeleteHum...the principle beyind open source Blender is fine, but this complex to be as shiny as Pixar is blocking their creativity. Now they must improve the writing skills and for that theres no software, just live experience.
