More comP notes...

So this is the first time I've used linear workflow in my 3d---> EXR---> 32bpc in After Effects and I must say its pretty great ^ ^ There's so much flexibility when it comes to relighting or doing secondary color correction in After Effects...

So what I'm doing a lot of is adding in more fake volumetric lighting into the scenes for emphasis or to add some color when and where I want it... In 32bit all ya gotta do is make a solid the color you want like yellow for candle light then make an elliptical lask with about 250 pixels of feathering for 1080 comps... change the transfer mode to ADD and there ya go...

Along with "relighting" with solids another suiTE thing I've found is that you can use the "exposure" effect in After Effects and in 32bpc with high dynamic range sources like my Exr sequences and you can add its like adjust the aperture after the fact 0_0 There's no banding or blowout's unless you have hotspots in your scene BUT those are usually uncommon if you were using linear workflow in your 3d app...

So yeh.... I'm loving the amount of tweaking I can do... I've had to "save" a number of shots... that were lit pretty bad, pretty flat... and after I got through with my tricks they looked great... it takes a lot of work though... using all kinds of track matte's and secondary color correction...

For all of the fx shot's I'm using a mix of cg generated elements and practical shots... So I just did a sword clash shot....so I used some designY type sparks flying off I made in C4d, and some stock video of sparks, and a custom Optical Flare for the lighting effect... I realize its hard to imagine this stuff when I'm just typing about it BUT I'll be sure and do detailed breakdowns off all this stuff for the making-of DVD of HSM and all that...

So yeh two days without a BSOD or freeze... it seems my OC was to blame 0_o...strange though as I've had it OC'd all this time but I guess these massive complex After Effects compositions really put a strain on the system...

  1. Don't know if you use them, but Red Giant took-over Trapcode Particular - I recently upgraded to 2.1 and really love the shizzle you can do with it.

What format should I render out of Cinema 4d with?

UPDATED 2_27_13!  RENDER USING EXR Lossy Zip16! Since I'm working on a new feature film that will generate over 1500 shots made up of image sequences I need to make sure I choose the right file format to render to lest my hard drives explode. What I need from my format is  at least 16bit, an alpha included and preferably small size. I rendered out a frame from my film tallied up all the file sizes here- their all different types of codecs listed from smallest file size to largest. The render includes an RGBA pass, Depth pass, and Material Luminance pass because thats what I always render out. 1.00mb 8bit-Photo Jpeg %100 1.27mb 8bit-PNG 4.65mb 16bit- EXR lossy ZIP16 5.75mb 8bit-PSD 6.23mb 16bit-EXR lossy PLZ 6.44mb 16bit-PNG 7.94mb 8bit-TIFF 8.50mb 16bit-EXR Lossy 24 9.05mb 16bit-EXR Lossy Run Length 14.6mb 8bit-TARGA 22.4mb 32bit-EXR ZIP16 24.6mb 32bit-EXR Zip1 25.6mb 32bit-EXR PLZ 29.3mb 16bit-TIFF 29.3mb 16bit-PSD 40.0mb 32bit-EXR Run Length 58.7mb 16
