Progress 12/12

So as I got rid of the hardware and software problems everything is going smoothly... I composite/primary color correct/secondary color correct/render prep for 10 hours a day... with a lot of tough shots I do around 20 shots a day....if their are really easy I can do about 100... there's approX 1,600 shots to composite... I've proB done around 600 so far... just guessing... I DID make a lil spreadsheet/database thing with Bento to track my progress and I'm a PSYCHO CONTROL FREAK GEEK who loves doing that sort of thing 0_0

As I'm comPing some of these sequences I'm like WTF was I thinking? Cause to my standards now the lighting is pretty bad in some shots 0_0 When you move into grading you realize its all about THE CONTRAST...the colors really don't matter in the raw 3d shots and you can tweak that like craZY... so you must light for EMPHASIS... what is the focus of the shot? Light that WELL... next time I'm going to figure out how to do my lighting in Black and White inside of Cinema 4d... So I don't get fooled by the colors into thinking the shot "looks good"

Actually the way I've ended up lighting a lot of these shots is sucking most of the color out of the shots by desaturating them then adding light by using various colored feathered solids in add mode which look nice in 32bpc... so its like starting with Black and White and colorizing it WHICH WAS MY EXACT GOAL way back when... when I was in Kyoto I was in this video store where I had to geek out and educate this cool girl Kayo about old Samurai films ^ ^ She was nice enough to show us around the neighborhood and out to dinner, and for all you can eat sushi at her aunts hauS....so anyway I was in this video store telling this Japanese girl about all the old Samurai films she has never seen haha... How obnoxious am  I ^ ^ ....on a sidenote I have better conversations with older Japanese people than younger peeps...cause the younger peeps usually don't know who Tatsuya Nakadai or Raizo Ichikawa be and I'm crazy bout those actors!....ANYWAY  in the video store there was this Nemuri Kyoshiro VHS cover that was awesome... the film was in Black and White but in those days they had someone paint the Black and White images for the posters and stuff ya know to bling it out... somethin like DIS...

So that was a look I've been after... I KNOW I can't paint the images frame by frame BUT somehow this color relighting technique yields a kind of soft painterly look... doesn't look quite like that image...BUT it does look kinda like its painted er something...

SO since I failed on lighting some scenes in 3d I had to come up with a way to save them which somehow gave them a look I wanted since I started 0_o BUT I'm only doing that for sets/shots I failed on... the ones that look tite normally I just enhance with the grading instead of "rebuilding" If I have to be CAPTAIN SAVE A SHOT it takes a lot longer to doeS.... So I prefer to be Doctor Copy Paste and just blast through them shotS...

On the Samurai film TIP... since I geeked out and watched like every one I could find and read books and studied a lot of the arts/philosophies behind the films... I'll do a detailed blog post with my review/commentary and all that in the future...

  1. Hey mdot... Not sure if you've seen this before, but speaking of colorized Japanese art, here's a site dedicated to T. Enami, a Japanese photographer who worked in the 1800's. Enami carefully hand-recolored many of his photos, some of them in 3D. Truly a guy ahead of his time.

  3. Well I don't think I've heard of those actors but Toshiro Mifune is pretty much my favorite old japanese samurai actor.... person...

What format should I render out of Cinema 4d with?

UPDATED 2_27_13!  RENDER USING EXR Lossy Zip16! Since I'm working on a new feature film that will generate over 1500 shots made up of image sequences I need to make sure I choose the right file format to render to lest my hard drives explode. What I need from my format is  at least 16bit, an alpha included and preferably small size. I rendered out a frame from my film tallied up all the file sizes here- their all different types of codecs listed from smallest file size to largest. The render includes an RGBA pass, Depth pass, and Material Luminance pass because thats what I always render out. 1.00mb 8bit-Photo Jpeg %100 1.27mb 8bit-PNG 4.65mb 16bit- EXR lossy ZIP16 5.75mb 8bit-PSD 6.23mb 16bit-EXR lossy PLZ 6.44mb 16bit-PNG 7.94mb 8bit-TIFF 8.50mb 16bit-EXR Lossy 24 9.05mb 16bit-EXR Lossy Run Length 14.6mb 8bit-TARGA 22.4mb 32bit-EXR ZIP16 24.6mb 32bit-EXR Zip1 25.6mb 32bit-EXR PLZ 29.3mb 16bit-TIFF 29.3mb 16bit-PSD 40.0mb 32bit-EXR Run Length 58.7mb 16
