M dot Strange Sound DesigneR?

After a discussion we decided it would make more sense if I started on the sound design while the music is being completed... since I finish the editing work really fast and the book is done... I'm starting on the sound design... the first thing I do is break the film down into locations... then make sound lists for the ambient sounds needed for each location... for the sound "beds" for each set... this is like the never-ending ambient sound to lay behind the music, dialogue, and hard fx to fill things out... it ends up being things like wind, torch sounds, crickets etc....

So after I make those "ambient" lists... then I go through the entire film and list all the required "hard fx"... these are things like sword clashes, bodies falling etc... I finished those which is only a little more than 200 unique sounds...

NOW the thing to do is to set up my mic....look at the sound fx lists...get all my props and make my own versions of all the sounds that I can... OR grab them from sound fx cd's that I have and post process them all to sweeten things up... and keep tweakin on that until all the sounds are crossed off.. should only take a couple days... THEN once that is done I start adding them to the scenes...

I actually did a bunch of sound design for WATS but most of it was never used... I did temp sound design for the festival screener then handed all my files over to my friend Joe who did the final sound design and mix...but he didn't use most of it... but I had a good time making it... I especially enjoy making those ambient sound beds for the sets....

So yeh all the organization for the sound design is done and I start working on it tomorrow...

Also the book is finished being written...its now being edited... once that is done I'll do the layout

As soon as we have the online store set up with stuff to slang... I'll launch the teaser trailer... until then I keep working on this other stuff...

  1. Oh, yeah, sound is king. My favorite part of filmmaking. I love the fact that you are going to foley most of your own effects. Still, freesound.org has got some great sounds from all over the world. I use pieces of things there all the time.

    Have fun!

What format should I render out of Cinema 4d with?

UPDATED 2_27_13!  RENDER USING EXR Lossy Zip16! Since I'm working on a new feature film that will generate over 1500 shots made up of image sequences I need to make sure I choose the right file format to render to lest my hard drives explode. What I need from my format is  at least 16bit, an alpha included and preferably small size. I rendered out a frame from my film tallied up all the file sizes here- their all different types of codecs listed from smallest file size to largest. The render includes an RGBA pass, Depth pass, and Material Luminance pass because thats what I always render out. 1.00mb 8bit-Photo Jpeg %100 1.27mb 8bit-PNG 4.65mb 16bit- EXR lossy ZIP16 5.75mb 8bit-PSD 6.23mb 16bit-EXR lossy PLZ 6.44mb 16bit-PNG 7.94mb 8bit-TIFF 8.50mb 16bit-EXR Lossy 24 9.05mb 16bit-EXR Lossy Run Length 14.6mb 8bit-TARGA 22.4mb 32bit-EXR ZIP16 24.6mb 32bit-EXR Zip1 25.6mb 32bit-EXR PLZ 29.3mb 16bit-TIFF 29.3mb 16bit-PSD 40.0mb 32bit-EXR Run Length 58.7mb 16
