Don't be a gear WHORE oR

Know anyone who has 6 different camera's, 10 different lenses, 3 lighting kits and only shoots demo reels he passes of as "films" and is accepted as a filmmaker?

Know anyone who has the newest version of every creative application ever made, yet they create nothing except "tests" and is constantly updating said applications?

Know anyone who is always TALKING about making some film etc but uses a lack of GEAR as an excuse as to why their not working on it today?

DON'T BE THAT PERSON

The technology is just a TOOL... you can dig a hole with a shovel or a fork... yes one is more useful BUT you can dig a hole with both...

When you want to make a "film"... that means you have an "idea"... and your supposed to use your CREATIVITY to make that idea a reality by any means necessary... IF you are passionate about it... if you lack passion you will become a gear whore. All the companies that make film gear and the like will LOVE you because you'll buy all their stuff... but the gawd's of film will HATE you.

I think the goal is to realize your ideas... MAKE THINGS.. be they crap or not... just make things IF you claim to be a "creative" or "artist" or "filmmaker" or whatever...

It's NEVER been easier than it is now to make your idea's a reality and share them with the world... so come on.... STOP making excuses and get too it!

Even worse you could become a wannabe creative become CRITIC 0_o

Know anyone who claims to be "creative" yet they create next to NOTHING because they spend most of their time criticizing things other people have made? They nitpick and bitch about everything they see claiming that "they could do better" "IF"... the IF leads back to the gear whoring and excuses usually...

Life is too short to complain and say IF IF IF IF when it comes to realizing your ideas if your a supposed creative person... so if that's you STOP pretending to be an "artist" and accept the fact that your just a run of the mill consumer whore.

BUYING things is what brings most humans a false happiness... but if your an artist/creative you must CREATE to know true happiness... buying doesn't do much for us so stop fooling yourself.

  1. You pretty much just described me to a T.. LOL!

No joke.. I just bought a Canon T2i /550D because I wanted to make films (I had my eyes on that camera for over a year). I then decided I didn't have a nice enough lens, so I bought a new 50mm lens. Then I "realised" I can't edit HD video properly on my computer, so now I decided I need a new computer with tons of RAM and many CPU cores. Now my camera has been sitting on the shelf for over a month without use.. WHERE does it end?

I need to break this ridiculous habit!

  2. I got wrapped up in being a gear whore when looking at all this mic gear and stuff for my production... I was eyeing about $1500 worth of gear that would have been straight overkill for what I'm doing. Sure I want the sound to turn out nice, but I'm going to end up going for around $500 of stuff instead, which should be fine for what I'm doing. What kind of mics did you use for your productions M?

  3. @Zephyr

For my personal stuff I use a Shure Beta87a condensor mic I bought in 2002 connected to a Presonus audiobox that I bought with donations that people gave me ^ ^

For HSM I recorded at Endika's studio using my laptop and audiobox with a Blue BabyBottle mic that Endika has... so my personal audio setup is pretty basic.

What format should I render out of Cinema 4d with?

UPDATED 2_27_13!  RENDER USING EXR Lossy Zip16! Since I'm working on a new feature film that will generate over 1500 shots made up of image sequences I need to make sure I choose the right file format to render to lest my hard drives explode. What I need from my format is  at least 16bit, an alpha included and preferably small size. I rendered out a frame from my film tallied up all the file sizes here- their all different types of codecs listed from smallest file size to largest. The render includes an RGBA pass, Depth pass, and Material Luminance pass because thats what I always render out. 1.00mb 8bit-Photo Jpeg %100 1.27mb 8bit-PNG 4.65mb 16bit- EXR lossy ZIP16 5.75mb 8bit-PSD 6.23mb 16bit-EXR lossy PLZ 6.44mb 16bit-PNG 7.94mb 8bit-TIFF 8.50mb 16bit-EXR Lossy 24 9.05mb 16bit-EXR Lossy Run Length 14.6mb 8bit-TARGA 22.4mb 32bit-EXR ZIP16 24.6mb 32bit-EXR Zip1 25.6mb 32bit-EXR PLZ 29.3mb 16bit-TIFF 29.3mb 16bit-PSD 40.0mb 32bit-EXR Run Length 58.7mb 16
