Makes no sense but........

It's 3:35am now and I've been running tests on the 8800gt and 4850 since like....8pm 0_o

First thing I learned is that Cinebench is NOT a reliable Open GL testing platform on Vista 64.... Every time I quit and relaunched it the scores would vary wildly... 5200...4500...4000....4200...5000... stuff like that... so I was thinking that maybe my power supply was faulty so I decided to investigate further... I monitored Gpu-Z while cinebench was running...The Cinebench OpenGL test never pushed the cards past %20 capacity which I thought was weird... I use Cinebench because it is based on the 3d app I use... also Cinebench uses standard OpenGL in its test...and I have learned through my other tests that using Enhanced OpenGL in Cinema4d yields higher frame rates...

So I got two other popular benchmark apps that test opengl.... Lightmark and Furmark...

First I ran Furmark and monitored gpu-z... Furmark pushed the cards to %99 capacity the whole time AND every time I ran it the scores were very close.... like by +/- %2... I checked the Furmark scores the cards were getting compared to scores for the same cards I found online and they were very close.....

Then I ran Lightmark... again the scores were consistent from test to test and the scores were similar to ones I found online...

So since I now had two cards... an 8800gt and a Radeon 4850 I decided to bench them against eachother in my system using a few different drivers to see which one I would choose... I also used a few of my scene files from my recent Rabbit Junk promo to test real world Cinema 4d performance... here are my results..

So I'm going to use the 4850 with the version 8.7 Catalyst drivers...

Haha after testing the 8.8 drivers and uninstalling them the 8.7 drivers fail to install...SIGH.... time to reboot in safe mode and run driver cleaner... yeh ...this was a real fun weekend! hahaha...Did I mention I got a flat tire on my way back from getting the graphics card...yeh...hahaha

Oh for future reference... test system... Dual E5410, Tyan s5392 mainboard bios 1.01, 8gb ram, Vista 64 Sp1, MSI 8800gt 512-OC and Visiontek Radeon HD 4850

  1. haha wanna mail me the 8800? xD

In all seriousness, its good that you got the GPU issue ironed out, hopefully the Radeon will serve you well

  2. Now that's the way to test your cards! In test results I've read the 4850 has been kicking ass like crazy. Driver choice apparently has an impact, too.

Man, sounds like a tedious (but constructive) Sunday. Sorry to hear about your bike. Get some sleep!

What format should I render out of Cinema 4d with?

UPDATED 2_27_13!  RENDER USING EXR Lossy Zip16! Since I'm working on a new feature film that will generate over 1500 shots made up of image sequences I need to make sure I choose the right file format to render to lest my hard drives explode. What I need from my format is  at least 16bit, an alpha included and preferably small size. I rendered out a frame from my film tallied up all the file sizes here- their all different types of codecs listed from smallest file size to largest. The render includes an RGBA pass, Depth pass, and Material Luminance pass because thats what I always render out. 1.00mb 8bit-Photo Jpeg %100 1.27mb 8bit-PNG 4.65mb 16bit- EXR lossy ZIP16 5.75mb 8bit-PSD 6.23mb 16bit-EXR lossy PLZ 6.44mb 16bit-PNG 7.94mb 8bit-TIFF 8.50mb 16bit-EXR Lossy 24 9.05mb 16bit-EXR Lossy Run Length 14.6mb 8bit-TARGA 22.4mb 32bit-EXR ZIP16 24.6mb 32bit-EXR Zip1 25.6mb 32bit-EXR PLZ 29.3mb 16bit-TIFF 29.3mb 16bit-PSD 40.0mb 32bit-EXR Run Length 58.7mb 16
